Freelance Graphics for Windows READ.ME File
===========================================
This document contains important information which is not,
in most cases, included in the Freelance Graphics printed
documentation or online Help. The following topics are
covered:
* Upgrading from previous releases of Freelance Graphics
* Installing Freelance Graphics with options
* Running QuickStart, the online tutorial
* About the FLW.INI file
* Recommended printer drivers
* Using Harvard Graphics 2.3 .CHT files
* Printing to certain non-PostScript, black-and-white
printers
* Printing in black and white using the Fujitsu Dot
Matrix 24 Pin DL Series Driver Version 3
* Using the Adobe Type Manager software and fonts
** Upgrading from Previous Releases of Freelance Graphics **
If you're a Freelance Plus or Freelance Graphics for DOS
user, see "For Upgraders" in online Help for information
about using Freelance Graphics for Windows.
** Installing Freelance Graphics with Options **
If you install Freelance Graphics with options, you can use
the Adding Freelance Icons to a Program Manager Group
dialog box to specify the program manager group. You can
specify the Lotus Applications Group, any existing program
manager group, or a non-existing group. However, if the
PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file specifies the
Windows directory without a disk drive letter
(as in \WINDOWS), you cannot specify a non-existing program
manager group. To correct this condition, first exit
Windows. Then either replace the missing drive letter in
the PATH statement or make your Windows directory the
current directory, for example, cd \WINDOWS.
** Running QuickStart, the Online Tutorial **
The Freelance Graphics Install program does not include
the disk space required for QuickStart, the online tutorial,
when determining whether you have sufficient disk space to
install Freelance Graphics. Therefore, it is possible that
Freelance Graphics is installed but QuickStart is not.
When you start Freelance Graphics the first time, it
automatically tries to run QuickStart. If Freelance
Graphics was unable to install QuickStart, you will see
the message "QuickStart requires at least 1.5M free disk
space." If possible, erase files you no longer need from
the disk to free the necessary 1.5 megabytes and install
the QuickStart files. See "Reinstall Deleted Files" in
Chapter 3 of the Freelance Graphics "Installation Guide"
for more information.
** About the FLW.INI File **
When you install Freelance Graphics for Windows, the
Installation program transfers a file named FLW.INI to
your Windows directory. This file contains initialization
specifications for Freelance Graphics. The file contains
comments that clearly describe each line. You can also
see "About the FLW.INI File" in online Help for more
information.
** Recommended Printer Drivers **
The Windows environment supports a large number of output
devices. Freelance Graphics was tested with the most
current versions of printer drivers for these devices.
If possible, use the most current drivers available.
In some cases, the newer version of a printer driver was
found to work better with Freelance Graphics than previous
versions of the driver. Specifically, use the specified
versions of the following drivers:
- HP LaserJet Version 3.4
- HP LaserJet III Version 3.77
- HP PaintJet Version 1.01
If you are using a NEC 24 Pin Dot Matrix printer, use the
NEC 24 Pin Dot Matrix Driver Version 3.0 from Microsoft.
To print with color, use the NEC 24 Pin Dot Matrix Driver
Version 1.370 from NEC Deutschland GmbH, but be aware that
this driver may cause your computer to hang when you print
pages containing graduated fills.
** Using Harvard Graphics 2.3 .CHT Files **
If you have Harvard Graphics 2.3 .CHT files that you would
like to use in a Freelance Graphics for Windows
presentation, you can convert them into Freelance Graphics
charts. See "Add Harvard Graphics 2.3 .CHT Files to Your
Freelance Graphics Presentations" in your Freelance
Graphics package for more information.
** Printing to Certain Non-PostScript, Black-and-White
Printers **
Be aware that some device drivers, such as those used for
some HP LaserJet printers, are limited in certain graphics
capabilities. With these drivers, lines and text print only
in black or white, not in shades of gray. This is also
true for certain fill patterns and color combinations.
This means that although your Freelance Graphics
presentation may display properly on screen (in black,
white, and shades of gray), it will print to these drivers
in black or white only. For example, if you use shades of
gray for bars in a bar chart, the bars in your graph may
look good on the screen, but may print as all white or all
black.
To work around this limitation, use a solid black or black
and white fill pattern instead of other colors when using
these drivers for printing.
** Printing in Black and White Using the Fujitsu Dot
Matrix 24 Pin DL Series Driver Version 3 **
If you are using the Fujitsu Dot Matrix 24 Pin DL Series
Driver Version 3 to print black and white images, choose
File Printer Setup, click Setup, and unmark the Use Color
checkbox.
** Adobe Type Manager **
Freelance Graphics is optimized for use with Adobe Type
Manager (ATM). To get the full set of ATM fonts supported
by Freelance Graphics and optimum text handling within
Freelance Graphics, install ATM when you install Freelance
Graphics, even if you've already installed ATM, for
example, for other Lotus products.
If you have a version of ATM older than version 1.15, you
must install the version of ATM that is provided with
Freelance Graphics. To do so, turn off ATM from the ATM
Control Panel and restart Windows. Then insert the ATM
disk that is provided with Freelance Graphics in the disk
drive, select File Run from the Program Manager and specify
"driveletter":\INSTALL, where "driveletter" is the letter
of the drive containing the ATM disk. Restart Windows to
activate ATM before you start Freelance Graphics. This
procedure preserves the ATM fonts that you installed for
use by other products.
If you have purchased ATM version 2.0, do not hesitate to
use it with Freelance Graphics. If you have already
installed ATM version 2.0 before installing Freelance
Graphics, you should install the ATM disk that is provided
with Freelance Graphics and then reinstall ATM version
2.0. You do not need to remove ATM 2.0 before installing
the ATM disk that is provided with Freelance Graphics.
If you receive ATM version 2.0 after you have installed
Freelance Graphics, do not remove the ATM version that was
provided with Freelance Graphics; simply install ATM
version 2.0 on top of it. These procedures preserve the
ATM fonts that are used by Freelance Graphics.
** Soft Fonts **
Before the ATM Installer program can install soft fonts
for HP LaserJet and PostScript printers, you must install
these printers in the Windows Control Panel. Install your
printers before you install ATM. See your Windows
documentation for information on installing printers.
** Adding Printers or Changing Printer Ports After ATM
Installation **
If you add one or more PostScript printers or change
printer ports after installing ATM, turn off ATM using the
ATM Control Panel (do not delete it). Then reinstall ATM
over the current version on your hard disk. See the "Adobe
Type Manager User Guide" in your Freelance Graphics package
for information on turning off and installing ATM. This
procedure retains the fonts for any other Lotus products
that you have.
** Deleting ATM and the Freelance Graphics Fonts **
If, for any reason, you delete ATM from your hard disk and
then reinstall it, be sure to restore the Freelance
Graphics fonts by adding them using the ATM Control Panel.
See the "Adobe Type Manager User Guide" in your Freelance
Graphics package for information on adding fonts.
** Using Hewlett Packard IntelliFont for Windows 3.0
and Adobe Type Manager 1.15 **
Due to an incompatibility between HP IntelliFont and
Adobe Type Manager (ATM) version 1.15, using an ATM font
cache size greater than 96K can result in an Unrecoverable
Application Error. Use the ATM Control to adjust the ATM
font cache size to the recommended size of 96K.
** ATM Troubleshooting **
PROBLEM: You see the message "ATM fonts and PostScript
printer fonts don't match on Helvetica" (or
"Times Roman") when you're using the ATM program.
(This only happens once per session,
and will happen in any Windows application.)
SOLUTION: This problem will be fixed in version 2.0 of
the ATM program. Meanwhile, you can work around
it by removing all Helvetica (or Times Roman)
fonts using the ATM Control Panel. Be sure to
remove each Helvetica (or Times Roman) font,
including Helvetica Bold, Helvetica Italic, and
so forth. Do not remove other variations of
these fonts, such as Times New Roman PS.
See the "Adobe Type Manager User Guide" in your
Freelance Graphics package for information on
deleting fonts.
PROBLEM: You see the message "ATM fonts and PostScript
printer fonts don't match on XXX" (where XXX is
the name of the first font other than Helvetica
or Times Roman that does not match).
This message appears if there are more fonts
installed for the ATM program in the ATM.INI
file than for the PostScript printers in the
WIN.INI file, or if the ATM fonts are out of date.
(When you install ATM, the Installer program
creates a file called ATM.INI in your Windows
directory. This file controls how ATM works.)
SOLUTION: Add the missing fonts using the ATM Control
Panel as described in the following procedure:
1. Click ADD in the ATM Control Panel.
2. Select the directory that contains your
font files, which have the extension .PFM.
3. Highlight all the fonts listed in the
directory and click ADD.
4. When ATM is finished, restart Windows.
See the "Adobe Type Manager User Guide" in
your Freelance Graphics package for information
on adding fonts.
